第2章-7 完ぺきな人 (Perfect Man)
1 Not many of you should presume to be teachers,
my brothers, because you know that
we who teach will be judged more strictly.
2 We all stumble in many ways.
If anyone is never at fault in what he says,
he is a perfect man,
able to keep his whole body in check.
3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses
to make them obey us,
we can turn the whole animal.
4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds,
they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.
5 Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.
Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.
6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body.
It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire,
and is itself set on fire by hell.
7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed
and have been tamed by man,
8 but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men,
who have been made in God’s likeness.
10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing.
My brothers, this should not be.
11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?
12 My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs?
Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

わたしたち教師がほかの人たちより厳しい裁きを受けることになると、
あなたがたは知っています。
2 わたしたちは皆、度々過ちを犯すからです。
言葉で過ちを犯さないなら、それは自分の全身を制御できる完全な人です。
3 馬を御するには、口にくつわをはめれば、
その体全体を意のままに動かすことができます。
4 また、船を御覧なさい。あのように大きくて、強風に吹きまくられている船も、
舵取りは、ごく小さい舵で意のままに操ります。
5 同じように、舌は小さな器官ですが、大言壮語するのです。御覧なさい。
どんなに小さな火でも大きい森を燃やしてしまう。
6 舌は火です。舌は「不義の世界」です。わたしたちの体の器官の一つで、全身を汚し、
移り変わる人生を焼き尽くし、自らも地獄の火によって燃やされます。
7 あらゆる種類の獣や鳥、また這うものや海の生き物は、人間によって制御されていますし、
これまでも制御されてきました。
8 しかし、舌を制御できる人は一人もいません。舌は、疲れを知らない悪で、
死をもたらす毒に満ちています。
9 わたしたちは舌で、父である主を賛美し、
また、舌で、神にかたどって造られた人間を呪います。
10 同じ口から賛美と呪いが出て来るのです。
わたしの兄弟たち、このようなことがあってはなりません。
11 泉の同じ穴から、甘い水と苦い水がわき出るでしょうか。
12 わたしの兄弟たち、いちじくの木がオリーブの実を結び、
ぶどうの木がいちじくの実を結ぶことができるでしょうか。
塩水が甘い水を作ることもできません。）

口は、全く、「災いの元」 。しばしば起こる政治家の辞任は然るべきことだが、
ひとごとではない。
ぼくもどれだけ「余計なこと」言って失敗したことか。
上の英文にもあるとおり、口で失敗しない人は「完全な人」(perfect man) 。
そんな人はいない。
欠点だらけの人間はどうしてもいらぬことを言ってしまう。
結局、自分の中にあるものが口から出てくるのだから（12節）、内面を磨くしかない。
ちなみに "tame" とは「（荒々しい動物などを）飼いならす」という意味。
taming the tongue" で「舌を飼いならす」 つまり、言うことに気をつけるということ。
