２倍の努力 [Nehemiah]
They were all trying to frighten us, thinking,
"Their hands will slacken in the work, and it will never be completed."
But instead, I redoubled my efforts.

「彼らの手の働きは弱り、その事業をやり遂げることはできないだろう。」

Building, rebuilding, the ministry that God has required
of Nehemiah is in progress. The enemies heard (3:33 or 4:1)
and they were upset. They ridicule, sabotage,
trying to breach their efforts.
But instead now Nehemiah redoubles the efforts.
As soon as you set your mind to do good work,
the enemies will come (Matthew 4:1).
We must recognize them (12)
because the enemies' contrivances can be
very subtle. (Matthew 13:24-30)

語源はフランス語 (re + doubler)。doubleで「２倍にする」という意味があるから、
re （もう一度） + double （２倍にする）でquadruple （４倍にする）、あるいは
double a second time （もう一度２倍にする）という意味になる。
ただし、使われ方としては「倍努力をする」という意味で上のフレーズで出てくる。
イディオムとして覚えておこう。
トランプなどの専門用語としては「掛金を２倍にした相手に対してさらにその２倍の掛金を出す」
という意味が残っているから、イメージがつかめるだろう。
とにかく、困難にあったら、そこでくじけるのではなく、今までの努力を無駄にするのではなく、
努力の上に努力を重ねて、苦境を乗り切る、というイメージ。
